  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy, rain, sleet.
  • Destination / weather: Holt / Balsfjord / cloudy / part clear / clear.
  • Aurora activity: 5/10.

  • Wildlife: Three foxes.

The weather forecast said rain, sleet, snow and strong wind, and then later it should clear up from the south east, so I decided to postpone the start time with two hours for avoid the worst weather.

But, when we left the city, the really bad weather begins little delayed, so it was a hard drive where the wet snow packed around all lights on the bus, so I had to stop several times for remove it, so I could see the road.

At the gas station 70 km south in Nordkjosbotn we took a longer break, and when we contiuned the weather was better.

Then I heard from one colleague it was clear sky 100 km further south, and then an another said it was clearing up onnly 30 km to the east, som we headed that way ... but, it was overcast again when we arrived ...

Two big buses left the area, but I decided to stay and wait ... and then we begin to see stars and the sky cleared really good, but no Aurora visible ...

Before we left after 1,5 hours waiting our Aurora forecast said it should come some activity just before 2 am, so as I planned, a stop in Balsfjord 75 km south of the city; it`s happened ... and the next 45 mins we got a nice show, before the clouds covered the sky again.

Tonight I duplicated last night first plan, by staying at the coast, since the sky again was clear ... the weather forecast says the opposite, so I was actually on my way into the country side up in a valley close to the Swedish border.

First stop just a few km north of the airport, before we headed north of my own island Ringvassøya, where we got an beautiful time together with Lady Aurora.

First I was thinking about to stay on the coast, since the weather forecast was totally wrong and it was clear sky over the city when we left ... but, I didn`t really trusted it and went south east into the clouds ...

We missed the first show cause too much clouds, but when we arrived our own Toblerone mountain in Signaldalen valley, the sky was lovely clear, with only a few clouds.

Lady Aurora was shy, but suddenly we got a nice show above us.

We had just came back from a whole day photography day further north in the area of Grøtfjord and Tromvik area, when we got a lovely Aurora show on blue sky at 5.30 pm.

Then the patience game begins, more clouds arrived, and the activity was faded out ... so, we followed the aurora forecast, and checked the weather report every 15 mins the whole evening ... and then just before midnight Lady Aurora came back with a really good show which last to 3 am ... but, then I was sleeping ...

February 8th - Private Aurora Chase

The Lady was quiet tonight, so I am glad that we was close by the coast ... actually on the coast, so we just headed from Kattfjord, where I picked up my guests at Lauklines Kystferie and drove to Grøtfjord, 35 km further north on Kvaløya island.

We made a stop at Blåmannsvika where we got the best one, of a very early Aurora show who last from 4 to 6.30 pm.

When we arrived the final stop and I set a camp fire, the show was over and it was only a glow left ... and then on the early return we got little around 10 pm ...

New cold record on my chases; It was freezing cold 31 minus degrees celcius!

And such a beautiful and bright starry sky ... I normally recommend my guests to come back for the full moon Aurora, but this night Idecided to not mention it ... it was such a great and lovely sky ... I think I have never experience it like this ever ...

With snow in from west and the coast it was only one thing to do tonight, a drive I haven`t done so many times this season ... only 4 times in September, 2 in December, 1 in January, and now the first night in February; A chase into Finnish Lapland! Last season I was 70% inside the Finnish border ...

But, the temperature was dropping deap while we drove further east ... so, the engine was going all night ... not the best for the environment, but necessary for keep my guests alive ...

The Lady was shy tonight, but we got lovely green and red colors, plus the amazing stars on the camera ;)

February 5th
Couple of red Aurora stripes across the sky by the forest fjord landscape

  • Weather Tromsø: Clear.
  • Destination / weather: Skarsfjord / clear / part cloudy.

  • Space show: Several good and bright fireballs.

Lovely clear sky, so it was time to do it short again; So, I drove to a location where I haven`t been this season; Skarsfjord, 50 km north of the city.

It`s a couple of very good places to stay there, but too many guides are starting earlier than me, so it was packed when we arrived, so I was not sure where we should stop ... but, then The Lady was already going straight above us, so I found a new location which was perfect.

Lovely deep colors in the beginning, then little dancing and just before we should leave it became very curly and powerful.

Back in the city super early, before midnight, and while I was driving home tonight`s best show arrived; an huge explotion with a great and colorful corona stright above my bus, so I had to stop and shoot some pics ... Yeah, I know; I am Aurora addicted ;)
